HOW TO REACH
The picturesque little village of Prabalmachi is situated at 390 meters above sea level, in the hills off the old NH4 (Mumbai – Pune motorway). Take a left on the NH4, on the road to Pune, before the first road toll. Drive to the fortification of Prabalgad. The track is only fit for an SUV and the road ends after a point. You have to park the car and walk to the village about 45 minutes every hour. It’s a fast trek and can be done all by yourself.
base camp
Prabalmachi village is the ‘base camp’ of a walk through the fort Prabalgad (766 m). Many involved should walk up to the fort, which takes approximately an hour plus either direction. On the northern side of the Prabal plateau, a pinnacle of 500 meters is Kalavantin.
Walking down, watch the Paradise Flycatcher Male and Shikra, along with a good village lunch and then a little siesta and then travel to the Morbe Dam to soak the feet in the freshwater. When it springs up, it was time to get back to Mumbai Grind, not before stopping for chai and pakoras in a little tapri store, Jadhav Hotel. The best I’ve got in the last few days. The old NH4 is overall much more stunning and friendly than the Mumbai Pune Expressway.
